Views ot the proposed Red Car Wildlife Corridor and Hiking/Equestrian Trail that follows the Red Car Railway tracks

WE SUPPORT THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS CONSERVANCY’S APPEAL AND ASK THAT THE CITY REQUIRE A TRAIL AND WILDLIFE CORRIDOR DEDICATION FOR THE RED CAR TRAIL.

We value our City’s two natural parks and wish to preserve and enhance their natural connections. We believe that both Griffith and Elysian Parks will benefit from a hiking and equestrian trail between them. We want to protect native species in Griffith Park and Elysian Park by ensuring continued genetic exchange with other populations. We recommend that the City Council overturn the previous decision and uphold the Conservancy’s appeal to require a hiking and equestrian trail easement. We believe that creation of a wildlife corridor/hiking/equestrian Red Car Trail will best serve the interests of the citizens of Los Angeles.

Background: The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy asks for your support for protecting a critical wildlife movement and trail corridor between Griffith Park and Elysian Park. The City is planning to allow the construction of a new 120-unit condo on the former Pacific Electric Red Car right-of-way along Riverside Drive, which as proposed would sever this vital connection between the parks. The trail has been authorized by the State Legislature and is shown on the Community Plan. The Conservancy has requested minor changes to the building plans and a trail easement to preserve the linkage, but unfortunately the developer has not been willing to accommodate the community’s demand for a trail. It is now up to the City Council whether to require a trail or not.
Your Councilmember needs to know that you support this trail and want to see Griffith Park and Elysian Park connected..
