On Sat., Sept. 28 2019 Friends of Griffith Park will conduct a mulching in the Bird Sanctuary section in preparation for a tree planting that will take place in the early winter (after the sweltering summer/fall is behind us).
The National Public Lands Day takes place one day a year and this volunteer effort connects the public to nature through service!
Friends of Griffith Park has been participating in the NEEF volunteer effort for a number of years, and with the help of volunteers has helped make Griffith Park a better recreational space for all Los Angelenos. This year will be no different as we tackle the Bird Sanctuary, an area in need of some TLC ever since the 2007 fire.
We’re asking that volunteers dress comfortably, wear clothing that’s loose and light and while we provide gloves and tools, if you have a pair of gloves that you absolutely LOVE, don’t hesitate to bring them.
We’ll also provide water and munchies to keep you going, so hope to see lots of folks out for the morning!

We’re celebrating the big guy’s trek down and across the Santa Monica Mountains ending with his foray into Griffith Park in 2012 where he was identified and the National Park Service was alerted. Since his entry, he’s been a really good neighbor, mostly keeping to himself during the day when the Park is filled with visitors.
Getting to the Park was quite a feat, and for those who haven’t heard the story… P-22 crossed the 405 and 101 freeways on his journey to find a territory where he would be safe, and have to access sufficient food sources (his favorite is deer although he’s known to have munched on other species as well).
Griffith Park fits the bill nicely for our resident puma. P-22 is protected to a degree even though a normal territory would be upwards of 250 square miles for a male mountain lion. Not only has he managed to make the Park his home, he’s even starred in a film called The Cat that Changed America.
We’ll have more information as we receive it… but in the meantime, save the date!
